“It was improbable that I would ever find the plot of land needed, but my worldwide search spanning more than a decade ended when we discovered a natural amphitheatre lying 1000 feet above and just two miles from False Bay on the Schapenberg.
Decisions were then taken on appropriate cultivars, planting density and training. Biodynamic farming practices were implemented. Vinification and maturation techniques were determined, a cellar was designed to facilitate these methods and construction began. The final and critical ingredient? A great team of people with a common goal: To produce fine wine.”

WINES
Circumstance Chenin Blanc

Circumstance Chenin Blanc is produced from low-yielding, bush vines, situated approximately 5 kilometers as the crow flies from the Atlantic Ocean and also overlooking the ocean. These conditions ensure a cooler and longer growing season and allow for ripe fruit with good concentration and higher natural acidity. The soils are of sandstone origin, with medium-sized stones helping with drainage. They also have a very good ability to retain moisture. Production was approximately 3 t/ha.

Circumstance Cabernet Franc

The vines are grown on south-west facing slopes of the Schapenberg, Somerset West. The farm is a mere 5km from the Atlantic Ocean, with vines planted at a height of between 240 and 260 meters above sea level. The soils are of decomposed granite origin with medium sized stones, helping with both drainage and moisture retention. Strong south-easterly winds occur during the growing season, which helps to control growth and crop size. Production was approximately 4 tons/ha. In other words, packed full of flavour!

Circumstance Cabernet Sauvignon

he block used for our Circumstance Cabernet Sauvignon is on the north-west facing slopes of the Schapenberg, at an altitude of about 270 and 300m above sea level and a mere 5 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. Strong south-easterly winds help control growth and crop yield. Soils are of decomposed granite origin with fine sand/loam topsoil and medium-size stones, helping with both drainage and moisture retention. Production was approximately 4 tons/ha.
